NAFER ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2017

Kathy Bazoian Phelps

Partner, Diamond McCarthy LLP

NAFER Board Director; Co-Chair, Conference Programs

The NAFER 2017 Conference is shaping up to be the best ever. It will take place on October 18 – 20, 2017 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Miami, Florida.

The Receiver’s Training Camp is back by popular demand and has been extended by one hour to include an Introduction to International Issues. Both experienced and inexperienced receivers, as well as professionals in the field, have praised the Training Camp as offering practical insights that are not immediately obvious even to the most seasoned professionals. This year, the Training Camp will cover the “Second Quarter,” addressing the next wave of issues that hits after the rush of the first week has passed. Topics relating to Asset Identification, Asset Recovery and Asset Disposition will be covered in depth at the 3-hour Training Camp on October 18, 2017.

The main conference on October 19 and 20 will also be packed with informative and practical programs. Please take time to review the panels (descriptions below).   This year's panels are filled with regulators, judges, experienced receivers and other high-level professionals. (Click on presenter name for bio).  Come prepared to hear thought-provoking discussions on the issues of most concern to federal equity receivers.

We look forward to seeing you this fall in Miami!

The Development and Unraveling of a Ponzi Scheme: A Conversation with Travis Correll

           Sponored by East West Bank

This year’s keynote presentation will be a unique look at the case history of an actual Ponzi scheme featuring the fraudster, SEC enforcement counsel, the receiver, and receiver’s counsel.

In an open, “fireside chat” format, the SEC’s Marshall Gandy joins NAFER President Greg Hays and Troutman Sanders Managing Partner David Dantzler as they discuss the development – and eventual unraveling – of convicted Ponzi scheme perpetrator Travis Correll's  $100M Ponzi scheme.

In 2008, Travis Correll was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for running a Ponzi scheme. He was 31 years of age and the case, SEC v. Travis E. Correll, et. al, was filed in the Eastern District of Texas; Marshall Gandy, currently a Senior Officer and Associate Regional Director for the Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations in the Fort Worth Regional Office of the Securities and Exchange Commission, was the SEC enforcement attorney on the case.  Greg Hays, NAFER President, was the court-appointed receiver, and David Dantzler, Managing Partner, New York Office of Troutman Sanders was lead counsel to the receiver.

Mr. Correll served his time and now speaks candidly about how the case developed, the scheme’s ultimate downfall and his ensuing conviction. This will, no doubt, be an interesting inside look at how one Ponzi scheme grew and then unraveled.
